The Dalai Lama’s visit to Northern Germany

A report on our activities during His Holiness’s visit at Camp Reinsehlen (in the Lüneburg Heath near Schneverdingen) for a week’s teaching from Oct 26th to Nov 1st, 1998.
“You can really feel that this comes from the heart”, said a Tibetan Buddhist monk from Rome, as he stood surrounded by 25,000 hands.

The hands were hanging on the walls and ceiling of a 12×12 metre space within a huge tent at Schneverdingen. The installation had been built by us with the help of about 10 volunteers from Bielefeld and from the camp.

Approximately 5,000 hands were hanging on the walls and scaffolding frames that surrounded the space, and also on the ceiling, creating a very special atmosphere not unlike clouds in a Himalayan sky. Every hand not hung in this way was presented on tables and decorated with natural paper weights.

One could feel the creativity and compassion that was being transported by all these hands – what will it feel like when there are 1,000,000?

We had a short meeting with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama who thanked us for the project and said that it was helping Tibet. His Holiness also gave us his hand.

The response from people to the installation has resulted in invitations to take it to other places. We want to but we need help with travel and living expenses plus a small donation to keep the project going.

Thanks to all of you

who have already sent us hands – please keep them coming!
